Shafts for Air Operated Double Diaphragm Pumps
On an Air Operated Double Diaphragm pump the main shaft is there to connect both diaphragms, which is done by means of male or female thread on/in the shaft. From the first diaphragm pump design back in the 50-ties until today the same connection is still around. Diaphragms are in many cases connected with the shaft by means of inner and outer diaphragm plates (inner -and outer pistons).
Alternative Connection between the Shaft and the Diaphragm
Since a few years we see an alternative connection between the shaft and the diaphragm. The main shaft is still the way to connect both diaphragms but the inner and outer diaphragm have been removed at some diaphragms. This results in an integrated piston diaphragm. The inner-and outer diaphragm plate have been replace by a plate that is inside the diaphragm. The shaft is connected directly onto the integrated diaphragm without any inner piston. In this case no outer diaphragm plate is used which creates a benefit; a possible leak path between inner-outer diaphragm plate and diaphragm has been eliminated. It also means less replacement parts when servicing your double diaphragm pump.
The design, material and the size of the main shaft is pump size and OEM dependent. In most cases the used main shaft is not interchangeable between two brands.
